For decades, the standard advice was to change your oil every 3,000 miles. That rule made sense for older vehicles with conventional oil, but modern engines and synthetic oils have changed the equation significantly.
What your owner's manual says: The most reliable guide is your vehicle's owner's manual. Most modern vehicles with synthetic oil recommend changes every 5,000–10,000 miles. Some newer vehicles with oil life monitoring systems can go up to 15,000 miles between changes.
Conventional vs. synthetic: Conventional oil breaks down faster and needs more frequent changes. Full synthetic oil lasts longer, handles temperature extremes better, and provides better protection for modern engines.
Houston driving conditions matter: If you do a lot of short trips, stop-and-go driving, or towing, your oil degrades faster. Houston's heat also accelerates oil breakdown. In these conditions, erring on the side of more frequent changes is wise.
Oil life monitors: Many newer vehicles have an oil life monitoring system that calculates when you actually need a change based on driving conditions. Trust this system — it's more accurate than a fixed mileage interval.
Signs you need an oil change: Dark, dirty oil on the dipstick, engine noise or knocking, oil pressure warning light, or the oil change reminder light are all signs it's time.
