When Should You Replace Your Brake Pads?

4 min read

Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Worn brake pads don't just reduce stopping power — they can damage your rotors, leading to a much more expensive repair.

Most brake pads last between 25,000 and 65,000 miles, depending on your driving habits, vehicle weight, and the type of pads installed. Houston's stop-and-go traffic tends to wear pads faster than highway driving.

The squeal: Most brake pads have a built-in wear indicator — a small metal tab that contacts the rotor when the pad gets thin, producing a high-pitched squeal. If you hear this, it's time for new pads.

Grinding noise: If you hear grinding when you brake, your pads are completely worn and metal is contacting metal. This damages your rotors and requires immediate attention.

Longer stopping distances: If your vehicle takes longer to stop than it used to, your brakes may be worn or your brake fluid may be low.

Vibration when braking: Pulsing or vibration through the brake pedal usually indicates warped rotors, which often happen when worn pads overheat the rotor.

Visual inspection: You can often see your brake pads through the wheel spokes. If the pad material looks thin (less than 1/4 inch), it's time for a replacement.
